Every year, the Chief Justice of the Georgia supreme Court informs legislators about the state of the judicial system in the Georgia. I’m pulling most of these from Rep. Dar’Shun Kendricks Facebook:
About 25% of our jail system is made up of those with mental illness—per Chief Justice Hunstein in her State of Judiciary speech.
We [Justice Commission] recommend DECRIMINALIZING traffic offenses to free up our court system.- per Justice Hunstein’s speech.
“Our youth prisons are a pipeline to adult prisons.” – per Chief Justice Hunstein’s speech.
The Judicial Branch only receives 1% of the State’s budget.- per Justice Carol Hunstein’s speech.
It sounds like we need some major reform. Our prisons and judicial systems seem busy and overcrowded. We need to make sure we are not sending our children down a pipeline that leads to prison.
